Reading Comprehension Strategies

Reading comprehension is a key skill for the Baccalaureate English exam. Here are strategies to help you succeed.

Before Reading

• Read the title: Predict what the text is about.
• Look at the format: Is it a letter, article, story, dialogue?
• Read the questions first: Know what information to look for.

While Reading

• Skim: Read quickly for the main idea.
• Scan: Look for specific information (names, dates, numbers).
• Underline key words: Mark important words and phrases.
• Guess meaning from context: Don t stop at every unknown word.

After Reading

• Identify the main idea: What is the text mostly about?
• Identify the author s purpose: Inform, persuade, entertain?
• Answer the questions: Use your own words when possible.

Types of Questions

• Literal questions: Directly from the text. Find and copy.
• Inferential questions: Read between the lines. What does the author imply?
• Vocabulary questions: Find words that mean… / What does X mean?
• Reference questions: What does the word X refer to?
