Linking Words
Linking words (also called connectors or transition words) connect ideas and show relationships between sentences and paragraphs.
Addition
- Moreover, furthermore, in addition, besides, also, as well as
- Example: He is intelligent. Moreover, he is hardworking.
Contrast
- However, nevertheless, on the other hand, although, even though, but, yet, whereas
- Example: She is rich. However, she is not happy.
Cause and Effect
- Therefore, consequently, as a result, thus, hence, because, since, so
- Example: He studied hard. Therefore, he passed the exam.
Sequence
- First, firstly, second, secondly, next, then, after that, finally, eventually
- Example: First, read the text. Then, answer the questions.
Conclusion
- In conclusion, to sum up, all in all, overall, in short, in brief
- Example: In conclusion, education is essential for development.
Exercises
- Fill with a linking word: He was tired, ___ he continued working.
- Write a paragraph using at least 3 different linking words.
