Prepositions of Movement
Prepositions of movement show direction or the path of movement. They are used after verbs of motion like go, come, walk, run, drive, fly.
Common Prepositions of Movement
To: towards a destination. ‘I go to school.’ Towards: in the direction of. ‘She walked towards the door.’ Into: entering a space. ‘He jumped into the pool.’ Onto: moving to a surface. ‘The cat jumped onto the table.’ Across: from one side to the other. ‘They swam across the river.’ Through: from inside to the other side. ‘We walked through the tunnel.’
More Prepositions
Up/down: ‘We climbed up the mountain.’ ‘He ran down the stairs.’ Along: following a line. ‘She walked along the beach.’ Around: in a circular direction. ‘They ran around the field.’ Past: passing by. ‘I walked past the mosque.’ Over: above and across. ‘The bird flew over the house.’
