Lesson Objectives
- Identify the different types of questions in English
- Formulate Yes/No questions correctly
- Use Wh- question words appropriately
- Master question formation for the Bac exam
1. Yes/No Questions
These are questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no”. We form them by inverting the subject and the auxiliary verb.
- With “to be”: Is he a teacher? → Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t.
- With auxiliary verbs (can, will, must, have): Can you swim? Have they arrived?
- With simple tenses: Do you like coffee? Does she speak French? Did they travel?
2. Wh- Questions
Wh- questions begin with a question word and ask for specific information.
| Question Word | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| What | Things, ideas, actions | What is your name? |
| Who | People (subject) | Who wrote this book? |
| Whom | People (object) | Whom did you meet? |
| Where | Place | Where do you live? |
| When | Time | When did the war start? |
| Why | Reason | Why are you late? |
| How | Manner, condition | How does it work? |
| Which | Choice | Which colour do you prefer? |
| Whose | Possession | Whose book is this? |
3. Question Structure
Wh-word + Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb + …?
Examples:
- Where do you live?
- Why is she crying?
- When will they arrive?
- How long have you been studying?
Special case: When “who/what/which” is the subject of the question, we do NOT use an auxiliary: “Who called you?” (NOT “Who did call you?”)
4. Subject vs Object Questions
- Subject question: Who wrote Hamlet? (Who = subject, no auxiliary needed)
- Object question: Who did Shakespeare write? (Who = object, auxiliary needed)
Bac Exam Exercise
Exercise: Ask questions about the underlined parts:
1. Shakespeare wrote Hamlet in 1601.
2. The students are preparing for the exam.
3. He has been working for five hours.
Correction:
1. What did Shakespeare write? / When did Shakespeare write Hamlet?
2. Who is preparing for the exam?
3. How long has he been working?
Summary
Mastering question formation is essential for the Bac English exam. Remember the structure: Wh-word + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb. When the question word is the subject, no auxiliary is needed. Practice with all tenses to improve accuracy.
