Bac English: The Passive Voice – Rules, Forms and Practice – 3rd Year Secondary School

The Passive Voice – 3rd Year Secondary School (Bac) English

The Passive Voice is an essential grammar topic for the Baccalaureate English exam. It frequently appears in rewriting exercises (transform active to passive), multiple-choice questions, and writing tasks. This lesson covers all the rules with clear examples and Bac-style exercises.

Lesson Objectives:

  • Understand when and why to use the passive voice
  • Learn how to form the passive in all tenses
  • Practice transforming active sentences to passive
  • Master common passive structures for the Bac exam

1. What is the Passive Voice?

The passive voice is used when the action is more important than the person who does it, or when the person who does the action is unknown or obvious. Structure: Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle (+ by agent).
Active: The students write the exam.
Passive: The exam is written by the students.

2. Passive Forms by Tense:

  • Present Simple: am/is/are + P.P. – The homework is done every day.
  • Past Simple: was/were + P.P. – The letter was sent yesterday.
  • Future Simple: will be + P.P. – The results will be announced soon.
  • Present Continuous: am/is/are being + P.P. – The road is being repaired.
  • Past Continuous: was/were being + P.P. – The car was being washed.
  • Present Perfect: has/have been + P.P. – The project has been completed.
  • Past Perfect: had been + P.P. – The door had been locked.
  • Modal Verbs: modal + be + P.P. – This must be done today.

3. How to Transform Active to Passive:

Step 1: The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
Step 2: Identify the tense of the verb in the active sentence.
Step 3: Use the correct form of ‘be’ in that tense + past participle.
Step 4: The subject of the active sentence becomes the agent (optional), introduced by ‘by’.
Example: Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. → Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.

4. Special Cases:

  • Verbs with two objects: She gave me a book. → I was given a book (by her). / A book was given to me (by her).
  • Impersonal passive (It is said that…): People say that… → It is said that… / He is said to…
  • Get passive: He got arrested. (informal, used for unexpected events)
  • Causative have/get: I had my car repaired. (someone else does it for you)

Bac-Style Exercise:

Rewrite the following sentences using the passive voice:

  1. The government will build a new hospital next year.
Answer: A new hospital will be built next year.
  2. Someone has stolen my wallet.
Answer: My wallet has been stolen.
  3. The students are preparing the presentation.
Answer: The presentation is being prepared by the students.
  4. They had already finished the work before the deadline.
Answer: The work had already been finished before the deadline.
  5. Parents should encourage children to read more.
Answer: Children should be encouraged to read more.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Forgetting to conjugate ‘be’: NOT ‘The book is wrote’ but ‘The book is written’
  • Using the wrong tense of ‘be’: NOT ‘The letter was send’ but ‘The letter was sent’
  • Including ‘by’ when the agent is obvious: ‘The thief was arrested.’ (not ‘by the police’)

Conclusion:

The passive voice is a key grammar topic for the Bac exam. Practice transforming sentences between active and passive in all tenses. Remember: the passive is used to focus on the action, not the doer.
