English — Grammar: The Use of Articles — Definite and Indefinite — 2nd Year Secondary
Articles are a fundamental aspect of English grammar. The three articles – a, an, the – have specific rules for usage that every student must master.
I. The Indefinite Article: A/An
Used with singular countable nouns that are not specific. “A” is used before consonant sounds, “an” before vowel sounds.
Examples: a book, a university (yoo- sound), a horse, an apple, an hour (silent h), an honest man.
“I saw a cat in the garden.” (any cat, not specific)
Uses:
– First mention: “I bought a new car yesterday.”
– With professions: “She is a doctor.”
– In exclamations: “What a beautiful day!”
– With numbers/quantities: “a dozen, a hundred, a lot of”
II. The Definite Article: The
Used with both singular and plural nouns, countable and uncountable, when the noun is specific or known.
Examples: “I saw a cat. The cat was black.” (second mention)
“The sun rises in the east.” (unique object)
“Close the door, please.” (both know which door)
Uses:
– Superlatives: “She is the best student.”
– Ordinal numbers: “the first, the second”
– Before musical instruments: “She plays the piano.”
– Before names of rivers, seas, oceans: “the Nile, the Mediterranean”
– Before countries with plural names: “the United States, the Philippines”
III. Zero Article (No Article)
Used with:
– Uncountable nouns in general: “Water is essential for life.”
– Plural countable nouns in general: “Cats are independent animals.”
– Proper nouns (names): “Ahmed is my friend.”
– Meals: “I had breakfast at 7.”
– Sports and games: “He plays football.”
– Languages: “She speaks Arabic.”
IV. Common Mistakes
“I went to the school” (specific school) vs “I went to school” (as a student)
“She is in the hospital” (visiting) vs “She is in hospital” (as a patient)
