English Literature: Introduction to Literary Analysis

Literary analysis is the practice of examining a literary work in detail to understand its meaning, themes, techniques, and artistic value. It is an essential skill for students of literature and helps develop critical thinking and interpretive abilities.

What is Literary Analysis?

Literary analysis involves breaking down a text into its component parts and examining how they work together to create meaning. It goes beyond summarizing the plot to explore the deeper layers of a literary work.

Elements of Literary Analysis

• Plot: The sequence of events in a story. Analyze: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.
• Character: The people in a story. Analyze: protagonist, antagonist, round vs flat characters, character development.
• Setting: The time and place where the story occurs. Analyze: how setting affects mood, theme, and characters.
• Theme: The central idea or message of the work. Analyze: what the author is trying to say about life, society, or human nature.
• Point of View: The perspective from which the story is told. Analyze: first person, third person limited, third person omniscient.
• Style and Tone: The authors choice of words and the attitude conveyed. Analyze: diction, imagery, figurative language, irony.

Steps for Literary Analysis

1. Read carefully: Read the text multiple times, noting significant details.
2. Identify key elements: Determine the plot, characters, setting, and point of view.
3. Analyze literary devices: Look for symbolism, metaphors, similes, imagery, and irony.
4. Determine themes: Identify the central ideas and messages.
5. Develop a thesis: Formulate an argument about the text.
6. Provide evidence: Support your analysis with quotations from the text.

Example Analysis

Example: In George Orwells “Animal Farm”, the pigs represent the Soviet leadership. The gradual corruption of the pigs illustrates how revolutionary ideals can be betrayed by those in power. Orwell uses allegory and irony to criticize totalitarianism.
