English Grammar: Modal Verbs
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity, possibility, permission, ability, or obligation. They do not change form and are followed by the base form of the main verb. Understanding modals is essential for expressing various shades of meaning in English.
Common Modal Verbs
- Can: expresses ability or permission.
Example: “I can swim.” (ability) / “Can I go out?” (permission) - Could: expresses past ability or polite request.
Example: “I could run fast when I was young.” / “Could you help me, please?” - May: expresses permission or possibility.
Example: “May I come in?” (permission) / “It may rain today.” (possibility) - Might: expresses possibility (less certain than may).
Example: “She might be late.” - Must: expresses necessity, obligation, or strong certainty.
Example: “You must do your homework.” (obligation) / “He must be tired.” (certainty) - Should: expresses advice or recommendation.
Example: “You should see a doctor.” - Would: expresses polite request or hypothetical situations.
Example: “Would you like some tea?” / “If I were you, I would accept.”
Semi-Modals
- Have to: expresses external obligation. Example: “I have to wear a uniform at school.”
- Need to: expresses necessity. Example: “You need to study for the exam.”
- Be able to: expresses ability (alternative to can). Example: “I am able to solve this problem.”
Modal Perfect (Modals + Have + Past Participle)
- Must have: certainty about the past. Example: “He must have forgotten the meeting.”
- Could have: possibility in the past. Example: “She could have won the race.”
- Should have: regret or criticism. Example: “You should have told me earlier.”
- Might have: possibility in the past. Example: “They might have left already.”

c. When I was young, I ________ climb trees easily. - Rewrite using modals: “Its possible that he is at home.” → He ________.
