The Past Continuous Tense
Used for actions in progress at a specific time in the past, or interrupted by another action.
Formation
Affirmative: Subject + was/were + verb-ing. Ex: I was reading at 8 PM. They were playing football.
Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb-ing. Ex: She wasn t sleeping.
Question: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing? Ex: Were you watching TV?
Uses
1. Action in progress at a past time: At 6 o clock I was doing my homework.
2. Interrupted action: I was watching TV when the phone rang.
3. Two parallel actions: While I was cooking, my sister was playing.
Exercises
Complete: I (read) when you called. They (not play) at 5 PM. What you (do) yesterday at 8? Describe what you were doing yesterday at 7 PM.
