Relative Pronouns: Who, Which, That, Whose, Whom

Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses, giving more information about a person or thing.

Pronouns

• Who: for people (subject) → The girl who sings is my sister.
• Which: for animals/things → The book which I read was great.
• That: for people/animals/things (defining) → The dog that barks is loud.
• Whose: possession → The man whose car was stolen called the police.
• Whom: for people (object, formal) → The person whom I met was friendly.

Defining vs Non-defining

• Defining: essential information (no commas) → The woman who lives next door is a doctor.
• Non-defining: extra information (with commas) → My mother, who is a teacher, loves reading.
