Poetry: Figures of Speech
1. Simile
Comparison using like/as: “Her eyes are like stars.” “He is as brave as a lion.”
2. Metaphor
Direct comparison: “The world is a stage.” “He is a shining star.”
3. Personification
Human qualities to non-human: “The wind whispered.” “The sun smiled.”
4. Hyperbole
Exaggeration: “I’ve told you a million times.” “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.”
5. Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds: “She sells sea shells.”
6. Onomatopoeia
Sound words: buzz, hiss, bang, boom, whisper, splash.
