Reported Speech (Questions and Commands)

1. Reporting Questions

Use statement word order. Yes/No questions: use if/whether. Wh- questions: keep question word.

“Do you like coffee?” → He asked if I liked coffee. “Where do you live?” → She asked where I lived.

2. Reporting Commands

Use tell/ask + to + infinitive. “Be quiet!” → He told us to be quiet. “Don’t smoke” → He told me not to smoke.

3. Reporting Verbs

• Say + that (statements)
• Tell + person + that
• Ask + if/wh- (questions)
• Tell/Ask + to (commands)

Exercises

1. “Are you a student?” → He asked ______.
2. “Close the window.” → He asked me ______.
