Conditional Sentences Type 2 and 3
1. Type 2 (Unreal Present)
Structure: If + past simple, would/could + base verb. Use: imaginary present situations. If I had money, I would travel. (But I don’t have money.) If I were you, I would study harder.
2. Type 3 (Unreal Past)
Structure: If + past perfect, would/could + have + past participle. Use: imaginary past situations (didn’t happen). If I had studied, I would have passed. (But I didn’t study.)
3. Key Differences
- Type 2: about now, impossible, If I were…
- Type 3: about past, impossible, If I had been…
