The Present Perfect Continuous tense is used to describe actions that started in the past and continue up to the present, or have recently stopped with visible results.
Formation
Affirmative: Subject + have/has + been + verb-ing. Example: I have been studying for two hours.
Negative: Subject + haven’t/hasn’t + been + verb-ing. Example: She hasn’t been feeling well lately.
Question: Have/Has + subject + been + verb-ing? Example: Have you been waiting long?
Uses
- Actions that started in the past and continue to now: I have been learning English for five years. (I started 5 years ago and I still learn now)
- Actions that have recently stopped with visible evidence: She is tired because she has been working all day. (The result is visible)
- Repeated actions in the past up to now: They have been visiting us every summer.
- Emphasizing the duration: How long have you been studying for the exam?
Difference with Present Perfect Simple
- Present Perfect Simple focuses on the result: I have written five emails. (focus = completion)
- Present Perfect Continuous focuses on the action/process: I have been writing emails all morning. (focus = duration)
- Present Perfect Simple is used with stative verbs: I have known her for years. (NOT: I have been knowing)
- Present Perfect Continuous is used with dynamic verbs: I have been running.
Time Expressions
- For + duration: for two hours, for a week, for a long time.
- Since + starting point: since 2020, since Monday, since I was a child.
- How long in questions: How long have you been learning French?
- All day/week/month: I have been working all day.
Exercises
- Fill in: They ___ (build) this house for six months.
- Choose: I (have written/have been writing) three letters this morning.
- Correct: She has been knowing him since 2010.
