Question words (also called Wh-words) are used to ask for specific information. Each question word asks for a different type of information.

1- Who (من)

Used to ask about people (subject). Example: Who is your teacher? Who wrote this book? Who called you?

2- Whom (لمن/من)

Used to ask about people (object). Example: Whom did you meet? With whom are you going? (Note: In informal English, “who” is often used instead of “whom”.)

3- What (ماذا/ما)

Used to ask about things, actions, ideas. Example: What is your name? What do you want? What time is it? What is the capital of Algeria?

4- When (متى)

Used to ask about time. Example: When is your birthday? When did you arrive? When will the exam start?

5- Where (أين)

Used to ask about places or locations. Example: Where do you live? Where is the library? Where are you going?

6- Why (لماذا)

Used to ask about reasons or causes. Example: Why are you late? Why did you choose this subject? Why is the sky blue? The answer usually uses “because”.

7- How (كيف)

Used to ask about manner, method, condition, degree. Examples: How are you? How does this work? How much does it cost? How many students are there? How often do you exercise? How far is the school?

Word Order in Questions

For Wh-questions, the structure is: Question word + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + ?

Examples: Where do you live? What are you doing? When will she arrive?

If the question word is the subject, the structure is: Question word + verb + ? (no auxiliary). Example: Who wrote this? (NOT: Who did write this?)

Exercises

Complete with the right question word: ___ is your best friend? ___ do you go to school? ___ are you happy?
Make questions: I live in Algiers. (Where…) She is my sister. (Who…)
Choose: (Who/What) is the name of your school? (When/Where) is the exam?
