Present Perfect Tense
The Present Perfect Tense connects the past with the present. It is formed with “have/has” + past participle.
1. Formation
Affirmative: Subject + have/has + past participle. Example: I have finished. She has gone.
Negative: Subject + have/has + not + past participle. Example: They have not (haven’t) arrived.
Questions: Have/Has + subject + past participle? Example: Have you seen him?
2. Uses
Past actions with present relevance: “I have lost my keys” (I still can’t find them). Life experiences: “She has visited London twice.” Unfinished past: “He has lived here for 5 years” (still lives here). With ever/never: “Have you ever been to Paris?” Recent past with just: “They have just left.”
3. Past Participle
Regular: verb + ed (play→played, finish→finished). Irregular: must be memorized (go→gone, eat→eaten, see→seen, write→written, take→taken, break→broken, speak→spoken).
4. For vs Since
For + duration: for 2 years, for a week, for a long time.
Since + starting point: since 2020, since Monday, since I was a child.
5. Present Perfect vs Simple Past
Present Perfect: indefinite past, connected to now. “I have visited Paris” (experience).
Simple Past: specific time, finished. “I visited Paris in 2019.”
6. Examples
Example 1: “She has never tried sushi.”
Example 2: “Have you finished your homework?”
Example 3: “They have lived here since 2015.”
Example 4: “I have just seen a great film.”
Exercices
1. Complete: She ___ (visit) three countries. They ___ (not/finish) yet.
2. Make questions: He has been to London. → ___?
3. Write 3 experiences using Present Perfect.
