1. What is the Passive Voice?
In the active voice, the subject performs the action. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action.
Active: The boy eats an apple. Passive: An apple is eaten by the boy.
2. Formation (Structure)
Subject + (to be) + Past Participle (V3) + (by + agent)
3. Passive Voice by Tense

4. When to use the Passive?
- When the agent (doer) is unknown or unimportant: “My car was stolen.”
- When the action is more important than the doer: “The bridge was built in 1990.”
- In scientific and formal writing
5. Special Cases
Verbs with two objects (give, send, offer, tell, etc.):
- Active: She gave me a book.
- Passive 1: I was given a book. (more common)
- Passive 2: A book was given to me.
BAC Exercise (Exercice Corrigé)
Exercise: Rewrite the sentences in the passive voice:
- Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.
- The students will finish the project tomorrow.
- Someone has stolen my wallet.
- They are building a new hospital.
Answers:
- Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.
- The project will be finished tomorrow (by the students).
- My wallet has been stolen.
- A new hospital is being built.
