The Present Perfect Continuous
The Present Perfect Continuous tense connects the past with the present, focusing on the duration or continuation of an action that started in the past and is still happening or has just stopped.
Formation
Subject + have/has + been + verb-ing
Uses
- Actions that started in the past and continue to the present: ‘I have been studying English for five years.’
- Actions that have just finished with visible results: ‘She is tired because she has been working all day.’
- Emphasizing duration: ‘They have been waiting for two hours.’
Difference with Present Perfect Simple
- Present Perfect Simple: focuses on completion/result. ‘I have written three letters.’
- Present Perfect Continuous: focuses on duration/process. ‘I have been writing letters all morning.’
Exercise
