The Passive Voice: All Tenses with Examples
The passive voice is used when the action is more important than the doer.
1. Formation
Active: Subject + Verb + Object. The cat ate the fish.
Passive: Object + be (conjugated) + past participle + (by + subject). The fish was eaten by the cat.
2. Passive across tenses

| Present Simple | He writes the letter | The letter is written |
| Past Simple | He wrote the letter | The letter was written |
| Future Simple | He will write | The letter will be written |
| Present Perfect | He has written | The letter has been written |
| Modal | He must write | The letter must be written |
3. When to use passive
- The doer is unknown: My car was stolen.
- Formal writing and scientific texts.
Exercise
Change to passive:
- The chef prepares the meal.
- Someone has stolen my wallet.
- They will build a new school.
