Modal Verbs for Deduction: Must, Might, May, Could, Can’t
Modal verbs of deduction are used to make guesses or draw conclusions based on available evidence.
1. Certainty (Must / Can’t)
Must: Very sure something is true. Ex: He must be tired after running 10 km.
Can’t: Very sure something is not true. Ex: She can’t be at work, it’s midnight.
2. Possibility (Might / May / Could)
Might / May / Could: Possibly true, but not certain.
Ex: He might come to the party. She may be sick. It could rain later.
3. Degrees of certainty
| Modal | Certainty | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Must | 95% sure (positive) | He must be at home |
| Can’t | 95% sure (negative) | He can’t be at home |
| May / Could | 50% sure | He may be at home |
| Might | 30% sure | He might be at home |
4. Past deduction
Use modal + have + past participle: He must have left early. She might have forgotten.
