Reported Speech: Commands, Requests, Questions
Reported speech (indirect speech) is used to tell someone what another person said.
1. Reported Statements
Direct: “I am tired,” she said. Reported: She said that she was tired.
Tense changes: Present → Past, Past → Past Perfect, Will → Would.
2. Reported Questions
Yes/No questions: Use if/whether. Ex: “Do you study?” → He asked if I studied.
WH-questions: Keep the question word. Ex: “Where do you live?” → He asked where I lived.
3. Reported Commands and Requests
Use told (commands) or asked (requests) + person + to + infinitive.
Ex: “Close the door!” → He told me to close the door.
Negative: “Don’t be late!” → He told me not to be late.
Exercise
Report these sentences:
- “I will call you tomorrow,” he said.
- “Have you finished your homework?” she asked.
- “Don’t touch that!” the teacher ordered.
