Past Simple vs Past Continuous
1. Past Simple
Formation : Subject + past verb (regular -ed or irregular form)
- Regular : I played, I watched, I studied
- Irregular : I went, I ate, I saw, I bought
- Negative : I did not (didn’t) go
- Question : Did you go?
Uses :
- Completed actions : I visited Paris last year.
- Sequences of events : He entered, sat down, and started to read.
- Past habits : I always walked to school.
2. Past Continuous
Formation : Subject + was/were + verb-ing
- I was playing, They were playing
- Negative : I was not (wasn’t) playing
- Question : Were you playing?
Uses :
- Actions in progress : I was reading when he arrived.
- Background description : The sun was shining and birds were singing.
- Parallel actions : While I was cooking, he was watching TV.
