Past Simple vs Past Continuous

1. Past Simple

Formation : Subject + past verb (regular -ed or irregular form)

• Regular : I played, I watched, I studied
• Irregular : I went, I ate, I saw, I bought
• Negative : I did not (didn’t) go
• Question : Did you go?

Uses :

1. Completed actions : I visited Paris last year.
2. Sequences of events : He entered, sat down, and started to read.
3. Past habits : I always walked to school.

2. Past Continuous

Formation : Subject + was/were + verb-ing

• I was playing, They were playing
• Negative : I was not (wasn’t) playing
• Question : Were you playing?

Uses :

1. Actions in progress : I was reading when he arrived.
2. Background description : The sun was shining and birds were singing.
3. Parallel actions : While I was cooking, he was watching TV.
