Present Simple vs Present Continuous

1. Present Simple

Formation : Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he/she/it)

• Affirmative : I play / He plays / They play
• Negative : I do not (don’t) play / He does not (doesn’t) play
• Question : Do you play? / Does he play?

Uses :

1. Habits and routines : I wake up at 7 every day.
2. General truths : The sun rises in the east.
3. Permanent situations : She works in a hospital.
4. Schedules : The train leaves at 6 PM.

2. Present Continuous

Formation : Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

• Affirmative : I am playing / He is playing / They are playing
• Negative : I am not playing / He isn’t playing
• Question : Are you playing? / Is he playing?

Uses :

1. Actions happening now : Look! It is raining.
2. Temporary situations : I am staying with my cousin this week.
3. Fixed future plans : We are visiting the museum tomorrow.
4. Trends : The population is increasing.
