Present Simple vs Present Continuous
1. Present Simple
Formation : Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he/she/it)
- Affirmative : I play / He plays / They play
- Negative : I do not (don’t) play / He does not (doesn’t) play
- Question : Do you play? / Does he play?
Uses :
- Habits and routines : I wake up at 7 every day.
- General truths : The sun rises in the east.
- Permanent situations : She works in a hospital.
- Schedules : The train leaves at 6 PM.
2. Present Continuous
Formation : Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
- Affirmative : I am playing / He is playing / They are playing
- Negative : I am not playing / He isn’t playing
- Question : Are you playing? / Is he playing?
Uses :
- Actions happening now : Look! It is raining.
- Temporary situations : I am staying with my cousin this week.
- Fixed future plans : We are visiting the museum tomorrow.
- Trends : The population is increasing.
