The Past Simple and Past Continuous
The Past Simple and Past Continuous are two essential past tenses in English. Knowing when to use each one is crucial for telling stories and describing past events.
1. Past Simple
Form: Subject + past verb (regular -ed / irregular 2nd form)
Uses:
– Completed actions in the past: "I visited Paris last year."
– Past habits: "She always walked to school when she was young."
– Sequential actions: "He opened the door, entered the room, and sat down."
Signal words: yesterday, last week/month/year, in 2010, two days ago, then, first, finally
Examples: "We watched a movie last night." "She bought a new car yesterday."
2. Past Continuous
Form: Subject + was/were + verb-ing
Uses:
– Actions in progress at a specific time in the past: "At 8 pm last night, I was studying."
– Background actions in a story: "The sun was shining, and birds were singing."
– Interrupted actions: "I was having dinner when the phone rang."
– Parallel actions: "While I was cooking, my brother was cleaning."
Signal words: while, when, as, at that moment, at 5 o’clock yesterday
3. Combining Past Simple and Past Continuous
When a longer action (Past Continuous) is interrupted by a shorter action (Past Simple):
"I was reading a book when my friend arrived."
With "while" for parallel actions: "While I was walking to school, I met my teacher."
4. Common Mistakes
✗ "I was going to the cinema yesterday." (not a continuous context)
✓ "I went to the cinema yesterday."
✗ "While I watched TV, she called." (needs continuous for longer action)
✓ "While I was watching TV, she called."
Exercises
1. Complete: "While I ___ (walk) home, it ___ (start) to rain."
2. Choose the correct tense: "When I arrived, they ___ (have/had/were having) dinner."
3. Write a short story (80 words) about your last holiday using both past tenses.
4. Correct the mistakes in: "Yesterday I was visiting my grandmother. We were having a good time."
