Geography: Climate and Weather

Climate and weather are essential topics in geography. This lesson explores the difference between weather and climate, climate zones, and factors affecting climate. Designed for literary stream students.

Difference between Weather and Climate

  • Weather: The state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place (short-term).
  • Climate: The average weather conditions over a long period of time (long-term).

Factors Affecting Climate

  • Latitude: The distance from the equator affects temperature.
  • Altitude: Higher altitudes have cooler temperatures.
  • Distance from the sea: Coastal areas have milder climates.
  • Ocean currents: Warm and cold currents affect coastal climates.
  • Prevailing winds: Winds carry weather patterns across regions.

Major Climate Zones

  • Tropical zone: Hot and humid, near the equator (e.g., Congo Basin).
  • Dry zone: Hot deserts and semi-arid regions (e.g., Sahara, Arabian Desert).
  • Temperate zone: Moderate temperatures with four seasons (e.g., Europe, North America).
  • Continental zone: Hot summers and cold winters (e.g., Central Asia).
  • Polar zone: Extremely cold temperatures (e.g., Antarctica, Arctic).

Climate of Algeria

Algeria has diverse climate zones: the Mediterranean coast (mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers), the High Plateaus (semi-arid), and the Sahara desert (extremely hot and dry).
