Relative Clauses
Relative clauses add extra information about a noun. They are introduced by relative pronouns.
Relative Pronouns
- Who: for people (subject). ‘The woman who lives next door is a doctor.’
- Whom: for people (object, formal). ‘The man whom I met is a teacher.’
- Which: for things. ‘The book which I read was exciting.’
- That: for people or things. ‘The car that I bought is blue.’
- Whose: for possession. ‘The student whose father is a doctor is smart.’
- Where: for places. ‘The city where I was born.’
- When: for times. ‘The day when we met.’
Defining vs Non-Defining
- Defining: Essential to identify the noun. No commas. ‘The students who study will pass.’
- Non-defining: Extra info, not essential. Uses commas. ‘My father, who is a doctor, works in a hospital.’
Exercise
Join using a relative pronoun: 1. I know the girl. She won the prize. 2. This is the house. I was born here. 3. The film was boring. We watched it last night.
