Advanced Conditionals

In addition to the basic conditional types, English has other conditional structures for more nuanced meaning.

Unless

= if not. ‘Unless you study, you will fail.’ (= If you don’t study…)

Even if

= whether or not. ‘Even if it rains, we will go.’ (= We will go whether it rains or not.)

Provided / Providing (that)

= but only if. ‘You can go provided that you finish your homework.’

As long as / So long as

= on condition that. ‘You can borrow my car as long as you drive carefully.’

Whether…or not

‘Whether you agree or not, we are going ahead with the plan.’

Exercise
