Writing a Formal Letter
Introduction
Formal letters are used for official communication. In academic and professional life, you may need to write application letters, complaint letters, or request letters. Knowing the correct format and style is essential for effective communication.
Format of a Formal Letter
- Sender's address: Top right corner.
- Date: Below the address.
- Recipient's address: Left side, below the date.
- Subject line: Brief description of the letter's purpose.
- Salutation: Dear Sir/Madam, (if unknown) or Dear Mr./Ms. [Name].
- Body: Introduction, details, closing paragraph.
- Closing: Yours faithfully (if Dear Sir/Madam) / Yours sincerely (if Dear Mr./Ms.).
- Signature: Your name and signature.
Useful Language
- Opening: I am writing to apply for / complain about / request…
- Body: I would like to inform you that… / I am writing to express my concern about…
- Closing: I look forward to hearing from you. / Thank you for your consideration.
Sample Letter
