Ability with Can and Could
Present Ability: Can
Subject + can + base verb
Ex: I can speak Arabic and English.
Negative: I cannot (can’t) swim.
Question: Can you play the guitar?
Past Ability: Could
Subject + could + base verb
Ex: I could run fast when I was young.
Negative: I could not (couldn’t) read until I was 6.
Question: Could you ride a bike when you were 5?
Be able to
“Be able to” can replace “can” and “could” in all tenses.
Present: I am able to help you.
Past: I was able to finish my work.
Future: I will be able to come.
