Second Conditional
The second conditional talks about unreal or imaginary situations.
Structure
If + past simple, would + base verb
Example: If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world.
Uses
- Imaginary situations: If I were a bird, I would fly.
- Unreal present/future: If she studied more, she would get better grades. (but she doesn’t study much)
Important Note
In the second conditional, we use “were” for all subjects (not “was”).
Example: If I were you, I would accept the offer.
Examples
- If I had more free time, I would learn guitar.
- If we lived near the beach, we would go swimming every day.
- If she knew the answer, she would tell us.
Exercises
- Complete: If I ___ (be) rich, I ___ (buy) a big house.
- Complete: If we ___ (have) a car, we ___ (drive) to the mountains.
