Passive Voice

In the passive voice, the action is more important than the person who does it.

Formation

Subject + be (am/is/are/was/were) + past participle

Present Simple Passive

am/is/are + past participle
Example: English is spoken in many countries. (The focus is on English, not who speaks it)

Past Simple Passive

was/were + past participle
Example: The mosque was built in 1850.

Transformation

Active	Passive
The chef cooks the food.	The food is cooked by the chef.
The students wrote the essays.	The essays were written by the students.

Exercises

1. Change to passive: The boy feeds the cat.
2. Change to passive: They built this school in 1990.
