Reported Speech (Statements)

Reported speech is used to tell someone what another person said.

Changes in Reported Speech

When you report someone’s words, the tenses change (backshift).

Examples

Direct: “I am happy,” she said.
Reported: She said that she was happy.

Direct: “I will call you,” he said.
