For vs Since
Both “for” and “since” are used with time expressions, but they have different meanings.
For
Used with a duration (length of time).
Examples: for two hours, for three years, for a week, for a long time
Since
Used with a specific point in time (starting point).
Examples: since Monday, since 2020, since 9 o’clock, since I was a child
Examples
- I have studied English for 3 years. (duration = 3 years)
- I have studied English since 2021. (starting point = 2021)
- She has been here for two hours.
- She has been here since 2 pm.
Exercises
- Fill: I have lived here ___ (for/since) 2010.
- Fill: He has slept ___ (for/since) eight hours.
