Reading Comprehension: Strategies and Techniques for the BAC Exam
Reading comprehension is a key skill tested in the BAC English exam. This lesson covers effective strategies to improve your reading comprehension and answer questions accurately.
Before Reading: Previewing
1. Read the title and predict what the text is about.
2. Look at any pictures, graphs or headings.
3. Read the first and last paragraphs quickly.
4. Scan the text for keywords related to the topic.
5. Think about what you already know about the topic (activate prior knowledge).
While Reading: Active Reading
1. Read the questions first so you know what information to look for.
2. Underline key words and main ideas.
3. Take notes in the margins.
4. Identify the text type (narrative, descriptive, argumentative, expository).
5. Look for signal words that show the structure (firstly, however, in conclusion).
6. Guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from context.
7. Break down complex sentences into smaller parts.
Types of Comprehension Questions
Literal questions: Answers are directly stated in the text. (Who? What? When? Where?)
Inferential questions: Answers require reading between the lines. (Why? What does the author imply?)
Vocabulary questions: Find words that mean the same as… / What does the word X mean?
Reference questions: What does the pronoun X refer to?
Main idea questions: What is the main idea of paragraph 2? / What is the best title?
Author’s purpose: Why did the author write this text? (to inform, persuade, entertain, describe)
After Reading: Review
1. Check your answers carefully.
2. Make sure you have evidence from the text for each answer.
3. Review the main ideas of each paragraph.
Practice Exercise
Read a short text and answer: “The text is mainly about…”, “The word ‘X’ in line 5 means…”, “According to the text, why did…?”
