Make vs Do: Common Collocations
In English, make and do are often confused. They form fixed expressions called collocations. Learning these patterns will make your English sound more natural.
DO is used for: work, tasks, activities, and general actions (especially when we don’t specify the activity).
MAKE is used for: creating, constructing, producing, and causing something.
Examples
- DO collocations: do homework, do housework, do the dishes, do the shopping, do business, do a favour, do your best, do nothing, do well, do sports, do exercise
- MAKE collocations: make a mistake, make a decision, make a plan, make an effort, make a phone call, make money, make a difference, make a cake, make a noise, make progress, make breakfast
