Time Clauses: Connecting Events in Time
Time clauses tell us when something happens. They are introduced by time conjunctions. The main rule: In future time clauses, we use present tense, not future tense.
When: “I will call you when I arrive.” (Not: when I will arrive)
While / As: For two simultaneous actions. “While I was cooking, he was watching TV.”
As soon as: Immediately after. “As soon as the bell rings, the students leave.”
Until / Till: Up to a certain time. “Wait here until I come back.”
Before / After: “Always wash your hands before you eat.” “Call me after you finish.”
Examples
- “When I grow up, I want to be a teacher.”
