Third Conditional: Unreal Past Situations
The Third Conditional is used to talk about imaginary situations in the past — things that did NOT happen. It expresses regret or hypothetical results. Structure: If + had + past participle, would have + past participle.
Formation
- If clause: If + past perfect (had + V3/p.p)
- Main clause: would have + past participle
Example: “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.” (But I didn’t study hard, so I failed.)
Examples
- “If she had taken the medicine, she would have felt better.”
- “If they had left earlier, they would have caught the bus.”
- “He would have become a doctor if he had gone to university.”
