Relative Clauses: Defining and Non-Defining
Relative clauses give extra information about a noun. They start with relative pronouns: who, which, that, whose, where.
1. Defining Relative Clauses
Essential information – without it the sentence is incomplete. The student who won the prize is my friend. (We need this to identify the student.)
2. Non-Defining Relative Clauses
Extra information – set off with commas. My brother, who lives in Algiers, is a doctor. (We already know which brother.)
3. Relative Pronouns
- Who: for people (subject). The girl who sings is talented.
- Which: for things/animals. The book which I read is interesting.
- That: for people or things (defining only). The car that I bought is red.
- Whose: for possession. The man whose car was stolen is angry.
- Where: for places. The school where I study is big.
4. Exercises
Join the sentences: I met a woman. She speaks five languages. → I met a woman who speaks five languages.
