Contrast Clauses: Expressing Opposition
Contrast clauses show a difference or opposition between two ideas. They connect statements that seem contradictory. There are several ways to express contrast.
1. Although / Even though + clause: “Although it was raining, we went for a walk.” (Even though is stronger.)
2. Despite / In spite of + noun/gerund: “Despite the rain, we enjoyed the trip.” “In spite of being tired, she continued working.”
3. However / Nevertheless + new sentence: “He is very rich. However, he is not happy.” “The task was difficult. Nevertheless, we succeeded.”
Examples
- “Although he studied hard, he didn’t pass the exam.”
- “Despite the traffic jam, we arrived on time.”
- “She is young. However, she is very mature.”
