Introduction to Question Tags
Question tags are short questions added at the end of a sentence. They are used in spoken English to confirm information or ask for agreement. For example: “You are a student, aren’t you?”
Formation Rules
The basic rule for question tags is: If the main sentence is positive, the tag is negative, and vice versa.
- Positive sentence + Negative tag: “She is a teacher, isn’t she?“
- Negative sentence + Positive tag: “He isn’t late, is he?“
Examples with Different Tenses

1. I am → aren’t I? “I am your friend, aren’t I?“

3. Imperatives → will you / won’t you? “Open the door, will you?“
4. There is/are → isn’t there? / aren’t there? “There are many students, aren’t there?“
