Infinitives and Gerunds
VERB + GERUND (-ing)
Verbs followed by gerund: enjoy, avoid, finish, practice, suggest, consider, can’t help.
- I enjoy swimming.
- She avoided meeting him.
- He finished doing his homework.
VERB + INFINITIVE (to + verb)
Verbs followed by infinitive: want, need, decide, hope, plan, promise, would like.
- I want to learn English.
- She hopes to travel abroad.
- They decided to stay home.
Verbs that take both (difference in meaning)
- Stop: stop smoking (quit) / stop to smoke (pause)
- Remember: remember locking (past) / remember to lock (future)
Exercises
- Fill in gerund or infinitive: (I enjoy ___ (read). He wants ___ (play) football.)
- Correct: (She avoids to go out. I finished to study.)
