Infinitives and Gerunds

VERB + GERUND (-ing)

Verbs followed by gerund: enjoy, avoid, finish, practice, suggest, consider, can’t help.

• I enjoy swimming.
• She avoided meeting him.
• He finished doing his homework.

VERB + INFINITIVE (to + verb)

Verbs followed by infinitive: want, need, decide, hope, plan, promise, would like.

• I want to learn English.
• She hopes to travel abroad.
• They decided to stay home.

Verbs that take both (difference in meaning)

• Stop: stop smoking (quit) / stop to smoke (pause)
• Remember: remember locking (past) / remember to lock (future)

Exercises

1. Fill in gerund or infinitive: (I enjoy ___ (read). He wants ___ (play) football.)
2. Correct: (She avoids to go out. I finished to study.)
