Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses
This lesson teaches relative clauses in English. For 2nd year literary stream students.
Defining Relative Clauses
Define who or what we are talking about. No commas. Use who/that/which/where/when.
“The man who lives next door is a doctor.”
“The book that I read was interesting.”
Non-defining Relative Clauses
Give extra information. Between commas. Cannot use “that”.
“My mother, who is 50 years old, works as a teacher.”
“Paris, where I was born, is beautiful.”
Relative pronouns
- Who/whom: for people
- Which: for things
- That: for people and things (defining only)
- Where: for places
- When: for times
Exercises
Combine: “I have a friend. She speaks three languages.” → “I have a friend who speaks three languages.”
