Expressing Obligations

MUST / MUSTN’T

• Must: strong obligation (internal). (I must study for the exam.)
• Mustn’t: prohibition. (You mustn’t smoke here.)

HAVE TO / DON’T HAVE TO

• Have to: obligation (external). (We have to wear uniforms at school.)
• Don’t have to: no obligation. (You don’t have to come if you don’t want.)

Difference

Must is for rules/obligations you feel are important. Have to is for obligations from others.

Examples

🔹 You must respect your parents.
🔹 Students have to arrive on time.
🔹 You mustn’t cheat in exams.
🔹 She doesn’t have to wake up early tomorrow.
