Past Simple vs Past Continuous

The past simple describes completed actions. The past continuous describes actions in progress at a specific time in the past.

1. Past Simple

Completed action: I watched TV last night.

2. Past Continuous

Action in progress: I was watching TV at 8 pm yesterday.

3. Combined use

Long action (past continuous) interrupted by short action (past simple):
I was sleeping when the phone rang.

Exercises

Choose: I (watched/was watching) TV when she (arrived/was arriving).
