The Problem of Freedom Determinism Debate
The problem of freedom is one of the central questions in philosophy exploring whether humans have free will or are determined.
Determinism
The view that every event including human actions is determined by prior causes. Types: theological determinism predestination. Scientific determinism causality. Psychological determinism unconscious motives.
Libertarianism Free Will
The view that humans have genuine free will and can make choices independent of prior causes. Arguments: moral responsibility requires freedom. Subjective experience of choice.
Compatibilism
The view that free will and determinism are compatible. Freedom is acting according to ones own desires without external constraint.
