The Passive Voice: Formation and Uses in All Tenses
The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action, not the doer.
Formation
The passive is formed with: subject + be (conjugated) + past participle (+ by + agent).
- Present Simple: The book is read by the student.
- Past Simple: The book was read by the student.
- Future: The book will be read by the student.
- Present Perfect: The book has been read.
- Modals: The book must be read.
When to use passive
- When the agent is unknown: “My bike was stolen.”
- When the agent is obvious: “The criminal was arrested.”
- To focus on the recipient.
- In scientific and formal writing.
Exercises
- Transform: “The students wrote the essays.” (passive).
- When do we use the passive voice?
- Change: “Someone has broken the window.” → passive.
