Reported Speech: Statements, Questions, Commands

Reported speech (indirect speech) is used to report what someone said without quoting their exact words.

Reporting Statements

Rules: backshift tense, change pronouns, change time/place words.

• “I am tired” → He said he was tired.
• “I will come” → She said she would come.
• “I have seen him” → He said he had seen him.

Reporting Questions

Wh-questions: keep the question word. Yes/No questions: use “if” or “whether”.

• “Where do you live?” → He asked where I lived.
• “Do you like it?” → She asked if I liked it.

Reporting Commands

Use “told + object + to + infinitive” or “asked + object + to + infinitive”.

• “Sit down!” → He told me to sit down.

Exercises

1. Report: “I am studying now.” → He said…
2. Report: “Did you finish?” → She asked…
3. Report: “Don’t touch that!” → He told me…
