Metaphor Types Explicit and Implicit
Metaphor is a rhetorical device where a word is used in a non-literal sense based on similarity.
Explicit Metaphor
The word used metaphorically is mentioned. Example: I saw a lion fighting meaning a brave man. The lion the metaphor is explicit.
Implicit Metaphor
The word used metaphorically is implied. Example: The claws of death appeared. Death is compared to a predator but only its claws are mentioned.
Metaphor Components
Everything is metaphorically transferred. Some: only part is metaphorical.
Exercises
Classify as explicit or implicit: 1) Time has sharp teeth. 2) I saw a sea of generosity. 3) The wind howls.
