Modals: Can, Must, Should, May
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity, possibility, permission, or obligation. This lesson is for 1st Year Secondary literary stream students (شعبة آداب).
1. Can / Could
Can: ability, permission, possibility (present)
Could: ability (past), polite request
- I can speak Arabic. (ability)
- Can I go out? (permission)
- She could swim when she was 5. (past ability)
- Could you help me? (polite request)
2. Must
Strong obligation, necessity, or logical conclusion.
- You must wear a seatbelt. (obligation)
- He must be tired. (logical deduction)
- You must not smoke here. (prohibition)
3. Should
Advice, recommendation.
- You should study more. (advice)
- We should help others. (moral duty)
- You should not eat too much sugar.
4. May / Might
Possibility, permission (formal)
- It may rain today. (possibility)
- May I come in? (formal permission)
- She might be late. (less certain)
