Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
Comparative and superlative forms are used to compare things. This lesson is for 1st Year Secondary literary stream students (شعبة آداب).
1. Comparative Adjectives
Used to compare two things.
| Adjective | Comparative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Short (1 syllable) | adj + -er + than | tall → taller than |
| Short (2 syllables ending y) | change y to i + -er | happy → happier than |
| Long (2+ syllables) | more + adj + than | more beautiful than |
| Irregular | special forms | good → better, bad → worse |
2. Superlative Adjectives
Used to compare one thing with all others.
| Adjective | Superlative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Short | the + adj + -est | the tallest |
| Long | the most + adj | the most beautiful |
| Irregular | special forms | the best, the worst |
3. Important Rules
- Double the final consonant: big → bigger → the biggest
- Change y to i: easy → easier → the easiest
- Use “as + adj + as” for equality: He is as tall as his brother.
